I ended up using levels and curves to try and find some of that lost detail as well as to bring the ice & snow to a more representative colour.
Technique:
duplicate the image;
decompose the duplicated image to LAB and have a look at the luminance channel to see just how much detail is available (just for info's sake - close this window after);
duplicate the original layer;
adjust levels and curves; only worry about details below the skyline;
apply white mask;
use gradient tool to transition right on the skyline (below=white (opaque), above=black(transparent))
